Edisto Island, SC 29438

A barrier island along the South Carolina coast, undiscovered, unspoiled and offering a relaxing change to your busy lifestyles. Lush semi-tropical woodlands; nearly five miles of pristine beach; superb fishing, crabbing and shelling. This quiet island, separated from the mainland by the Edisto River, began in antiquity. Archaeologists have explored numerous sites that Edisto Indians and others once called home. Bought from Indians in 1674 by the British for a few tools, some trinkets, and a length of cloth, Edisto produced riches in indigo and then Sea Island cotton. A Bed & Breakfast, Wyndham Resorts, and other rental companies offer accommodations from upscale villas to quaint cottages as a base for days spent on this shell-scattered beach. A newly renovated 18-hole championship golf course, a museum for the history buffs, water or land tours, shops, restaurants, a Serpentarium, and a very popular State Park provide plenty of activities.

This remote 1,255 acre sea island park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, is a beachcomber's dream and features some of the tallest palmetto trees in the state throughout the park. A day use area for beach access and a four mile nature trail are on site and overnight guests can enjoy a lovely campground or vacation cabins.
An oceanfront campground on a palmetto-lined beach famed for its shelling is just one highlight of Edisto Beach State Park. Only an hour from Charleston, the park also offers another campground deep in the maritime forest full of live oaks and some of the state’s tallest palmetto trees, as well as a row of comfortable cabins nestled in the woods but with a front-row view of miles of pristine marshland. Edisto Beach State Park also offers the state’s longest system of handicapped-friendly hiking and biking trails, including one leading to a mysterious, 4,000-year-old shell midden alongside a secluded bend on a tidal creek. The park also has an environmental education center, a “green” building full of exhibits that highlight the natural history of Edisto Island and the surrounding ACE Basin, one of the nation’s largest preserved estuaries.
